Philadelphia Locksmith Guide

Smart locks for Philadelphia homes: what works and what doesn’t.

Smart locks are genuinely useful — keypad entry for dog walkers and family members, auto-lock so you don't leave the house unlocked, remote access when you're traveling. But they're not always a simple drop-in swap, especially on older Philadelphia row homes.

The main issue with row homes is door alignment. Older doors shift with the seasons — wood swells in summer and contracts in winter. A smart lock that barely fits in July may bind in January. Before installing, check whether your door closes smoothly and whether the latch and deadbolt engage without forcing.

Brands that hold up: Schlage Encode (battery-powered, no Wi-Fi hub needed), Kwikset Halo (works on most standard backsets), and Yale Assure (compatible with most smart home platforms). We install all three regularly in Philadelphia and the Main Line.

Things to avoid: very cheap keypad locks with poor weatherproofing. Philadelphia winters are not kind to electronics exposed to moisture and temperature swings. Spend a little more on a Grade 1 or Grade 2 rated smart lock and it will last years longer.

Wi-Fi vs. Z-Wave vs. Bluetooth: most standalone installs in Philadelphia use Wi-Fi-native locks (like the Schlage Encode) or Bluetooth-only models paired directly to a phone. Z-Wave locks require a smart home hub. If you don't have a hub, go Wi-Fi native.

Call us for installation. We prep the door, install the hardware, run through the programming, and leave you with it working on the first visit. We also tell you upfront if your door frame or alignment will cause problems before we start.
